Is There a God?

You’re one god away from being an atheist!

“You’re one god away from being an atheist.” I read this on a forum and it hit me pretty hard, and it hit me in a doubt that had already been building.

As humans living in 2006 we have come to the conclusion that myths of the past are just that, myths. Zeus didn’t really exist, there wasn’t a Hades, we shouldn’t worship the sun. We intuitively know that the ancient myths are just made up stories to explain things we don’t understand. So why doesn’t this same logic get applied to the Christian God – or any of the other current gods?

So back to the quote. The posting that it came from was about a discussion the poster had with a pastor. Of course the pastor was explaining that you had to believe in God and that being an atheist was a certain ticket to Hell; a common scare tactic. The quote was his answer. I wish I could find this posting again because I would like to know the pastor’s response. Although I would imagine it had something to do with “one true God” or some such nonsense.

Which begs the question, if we can so easily dismiss every other mythical god that has ever existed, why can we not dismiss the Christian God as easily? (This question applies to other current religions as well, but I’m more familiar with Christianity).
